This page explains, in plain language, what data Subtys keeps when you use the subtys.comwebsite and the Subtys browser extension, and how we look after it. We decide how and why your data is used, so we're the ones responsible for it.
What we collect
- Your account. Your email address and whether it's been confirmed. We never store your password in a way anyone can read.
- Your learning. The words, phrases, translations, decks and review history you build up.
- How you use Subtys. Simple, totalled-up activity like how many words you've saved or reviewed, which powers your stats and helps us improve.
- An install id. A random, anonymous id for the extension that lets us apply the free tier. It isn't tied to who you are.
- Payments. These run entirely through Paddle. We learn that you subscribed and to which plan, but we never see or store your full card details.
What we do with it
- Run Subtys and keep your words in sync between the website and the extension.
- Sign you in and keep your account secure.
- Manage subscriptions, token allowances and deck limits.
- Show you your learning stats and achievements.
- Send you the essentials, like your email confirmation code.
What the extension can access
On YouTube and Netflix, the Subtys extension reads the video's subtitle/caption track so it can show dual subtitles and translate the lines you watch, plus the words you choose to save. It also runs on the Subtys website itself, for one reason only: to connect your signed-in account between the site and the extension (so the website can show you as logged in from the extension). It does not read your browsing history, other websites, or anything on the page beyond the subtitles. We use this access only for the features described here, never for advertising or to build a profile of you.
How subtitle translation works
To keep Subtys fast, most subtitle translation happens right inside your own browser: your device sends the lines you watch to third-party translation services directly, so those requests ride on your own connection rather than ours. When you spend part of a paid translation allowance, the text instead goes to our server, which passes it to a translation provider. We only translate the lines you actually watch, and we don't use subtitle text to work out who you are.
Who we share data with
We lean on a small set of trusted partners to run Subtys:
- Paddle, our reseller and Merchant of Record, for payments and billing.
- Third-party translation services, to translate text.
- Dictionary providers, for transcriptions and example meanings.
- An email provider, to send your confirmation messages.
- Our hosting, where your account and learning data live.
We don't sell your personal data to anyone.
Cookies
We keep cookies to a minimum and we never use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. The cookies we set fall into two groups:
- Strictly necessary(always on): keeping you signed in and remembering your interface language, learning language and settings. The site can't work without these, so they don't need consent.
- Referral(only with your consent): if you arrive through a creator's referral link, a first-party cookie remembers that link so the creator gets credited if you sign up. We don't set it until you accept it in the cookie banner.
You choose when you first visit, and you can change or withdraw your choice at any time from the "Cookie settings" link in the footer.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and learning data for as long as your account is open. If you delete your account, we delete or anonymise your personal data, apart from the few records we're required to keep, such as the transaction records Paddle holds for tax and accounting.
Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask to see, fix, export or delete your data, and you can object to or limit some of the ways we use it. To do any of that, just email us at volodymyr@subtys.com.
Children
Subtys isn't meant for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has given us their details, let us know and we'll remove them.
Keeping data safe
We use sensible technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encrypted connections over HTTPS and access controls. No system is ever perfectly secure, so we can't promise absolute safety, but we take it seriously.
Data moving across borders
Your data may be handled in countries other than your own, including by the partners listed above. Where the law calls for it, we rely on proper safeguards for those transfers.
Changes to this page
We may update this page now and then. We'll change the date at the top and, for anything important, take reasonable steps to let you know.
